Cron Expression Generator

Build and validate common 5-field Unix/Cronie cron expressions with ranges, lists and step values.

CronLinuxUnixCronieScheduler

Cron expression builder

Build a common 5-field Unix/Cronie schedule with semantic validation for ranges, lists and steps.

Accepted syntax

Use * for any value, commas for lists, hyphens for ranges and / for steps after * or a range. Examples: *, 5, 1-5, 1,15,30, */5 and 0-23/2.

Enter only the five scheduling fields, without the command that would follow them in a crontab entry.
CRON

Five scheduling fields, from left to right

A traditional user crontab schedule uses minute, hour, day of month, month and weekday before the command. This tool validates those five scheduling fields and does not execute, save or submit commands.

OPERATORS

Wildcard, lists, ranges and steps

An asterisk means the full valid range of the field. A comma builds a list, a hyphen creates an inclusive range and a slash defines a step over an asterisk or range. For example, */5 in the minute field matches minute 0, 5, 10 and so on within each hour.

PORTABILITY

POSIX baseline and common Linux extensions are not identical

POSIX defines the numeric five-field baseline and weekday 0 through 6 with Sunday as 0. Cronie, widely used on Linux, also accepts 7 as Sunday and supports step syntax such as */5. This validator targets that common Cronie/Vixie-style numeric syntax.

CALENDAR LOGIC

Day of month and weekday can behave as OR

In Cronie/Vixie behavior, if both day fields are restricted, a matching day of month or a matching weekday can trigger the job. Review this carefully for schedules such as 0 8 1 * 1.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does */5 mean in the minute field?+

It means every five minutes within the minute field: 0, 5, 10, 15 and so on. Cron step values operate within the field where they are written.

Is weekday 7 valid?+

In Cronie/Vixie-style cron, yes. Both 0 and 7 represent Sunday. POSIX itself defines the weekday baseline as 0 through 6, so portability should be considered.

Can I use month or weekday names?+

Cronie supports names such as jan-mar and mon-fri, but this generator intentionally validates numeric syntax only to keep behavior predictable across environments.

What happens if day of month and weekday are both restricted?+

In common Cronie/Vixie behavior, the job can run when either day field matches. Do not assume the two fields form an AND condition.

Does the tool support seconds?+

No. It targets the traditional five scheduling fields. Platforms that use a seconds field require a different cron dialect.

Does the tool execute the scheduled command?+

No. It only generates and validates the five scheduling fields. No command is executed or stored by this page.

Is a syntactically valid expression guaranteed to behave identically everywhere?+

No. Cron dialects and schedulers can differ. Always confirm the expression with the documentation of the system that will execute it.
